Αs long as there are people with vision, fantasy, willing to take risks, people who believe in their ideas, who are decided to make the difference, people who know well the market they're going to target and conduct clever marketing to pormote their niche, there will always be a next big thing based on a already used idea.

Today there is little chance for parthenogenesis on the web but with the ongoing maturity of web tools & services, any new smarter approach to an existing service/product that adds value for the benefit of the user, and which is backed up by effective and innovative niche marketing, will create interesting new websites.

As for Google, Microsoft and Yahoo failed cases, shows that you can't do it all and do it successfully. Also, getting gigantic tends to act as a black hole which starts sucking it all in, making the giant collapse under his own massive weight. And then you have to get rid of the plumps and settle with less. And in many cases, less is more ;)

The general idea has been put into service before the making of them, all they offer is a distorted idea of the game.

It is easy to read too much into accounts of success or failure. Often the reasons cited are not the real (or most significant) reasons for success or otherwise. It's interesting to look at these different examples, but they are unlikely to help you much in your own venture because the specifics of your own situation are more important than apparent similarities with other ventures.

Two words:

Customer Development

Read about it at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Gary_Blank

Also, it boils down to doing what you love. It doesn't have to be an VC/Angel Investor backed company to be successful. That's what really matters.
