40 Can’t-Miss Grunge Fonts From DaFont

December 14, 2009 by Mike Smith 17 Comments

How many fonts do you have downloaded? As a designer myself, I am going to go out on a limb and assume most designers have 500+ fonts on their computer and are always on the lookout for more (but always end up using your 8-10 favorite ones, right?) :)

We’ll, today you’re in luck because we’ve got 40 killer grunge fonts that are free to download from DaFont.com

There are many, many more great grunge fonts over at DaFont but these are the ones that I felt were the best and offered the most diversity from the bunch. I hope you enjoy the font list and if you design something with them, we’d love to see in the comments.

Be careful with your interpretation of the word “free”. You correctly write that these fonts are “free to download”. But you might get in trouble if you want to use them for free. I think especially of the font “28 Day Later”. Not only do you have to check the license of the font itself, you also have to check if someone else has the “real” copyright (in this case 20th Century Fox).
I speak of experience. We had this checked by a lawyer, because we thought of using this font in a web project. We ended up not using it…

I agree with Lars. Sometimes those fonts are put up and you can use them for free, but in non-commercial projects. This also very hard to be definite, if the font is free or not, cause very often the license file is absent and you just don’t know and can use ar your own risk.

We had the same issue with using Fifa World Cup 2010 logo font on the book about football’s world championship. It is kind of unlogical that making a book about fifa world cup 2010 doesn’t give you the premission to use the same font that was used in logotype. However it was also listed as free :)

P.S. I liked the article, I didn’t like some fonts, cause they are a bit wrongly made. Free fonts always have their own issues. The most popular thing is kerning. It’s wrong in 80% of all free fonts :) Anyway, thanks for sharing.

    Nice list.
The problem with this free grunge-fonts is that there are so much people who are using most of them in very situation.
    that’s why i can’t see some of them anymore…
